About Sauna Deco

For over thirty years, Sauna Deco is an iconic institution in Amsterdam. A beautifully decorated sauna, all in Art Deco style. Part of the interior of the stunning Au Bon Marché department store in Paris, built in 1920, saved from the wrecking ball was shipped to Amsterdam and reinstalled as sauna interior. But Sauna Deco has more to offer than a beautiful interior.

Stained glass, paneling, gilded decorations, sandblasted glass and artfully crafted stair railings. Once this lavish art deco interior graced the famous Parisian department store Au Bon Marché, which dates from 1920. More than fifty years later, management decided on a thorough renovation, where all of the original decor would have to be removed. Almost all of this beauty was destined for the scrap heap, but by chance was the demolition plans were overheard. Immediately a crew went down to the ‘Rue des Sèvres’ and after negotiations with a surprised management – why this sudden interest? – the ornaments were gradually removed.

As in an archeological excavation, all parts were numbered and, where needed drawings were made. A careful and precise task. The majority of the splendor found a worthy accommodation since 1979 at Sauna Deco, Herengracht 115. The build­ing itself was de­signed as an of­fice in 1890 by the important Dutch ar­chi­tect Hendrik Berlage. In keeping with the Deco concept, important Dutch cul­tural her­itage was saved from de­mo­li­tion ham­mers and integrated into the Sauna’s decor: char­ac­ter­is­tic gray-green wall tiles originate from the old Twentsche Bank that was located on Spuis­traat in Amsterdam.

»The use of your own towels and slippers is allowed
»While changing and entering baths or saunas, from a hygienic point of view, is advisable to shower first
»We appreciate it if you wear your towel / bathrobe outside the baths, saunas and showers
»We ask you to sit on your towel in the sauna
»Mobile phones or touch-pads are not allowed
»Any kind of physical intimacy will not be tolerated
»Smoking is only allowed on the patio
»Eating and drinking is only allowed in the lounge areas
»We expect a correct en curtiouscourteous behavior towards other visitors and staff
»Although we want to make your stay as enjoyable and carefree as possible, we are not liable for theft, loss or damage to your property
